Lifeways’ Exeter service retains ‘Good’ rating from Care Quality Commission

A Lifeways supported living service in Exeter is celebrating after retaining its overall 'Good' rating from Care Quality Commission (CQC). 

Lifeways Community Care (Exeter), which supports 10 people with learning disabilities and mental health needs to live independently in their own homes, was rated ‘Good’ following an assessment in October 2025. 

Inspectors noted the service demonstrated elements of ‘outstanding’ practice, especially in “monitoring and improving outcomes” and “governance, management and sustainability”. 

Generally, the service maintained its strong performance across all five key areas – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led – with inspectors praising the team’s commitment to person-centred care and independence. 

Key strengths highlighted: 

• Safeguarding excellence – Staff understood safeguarding processes and acted promptly to protect people from harm 

• Effective risk management – Risks were assessed and mitigated, with clear guidance for staff and involvement from health professionals 

• Robust staffing and training – Enough skilled staff in place, with regular supervision and training to maintain high-quality care 

• Person-centred care – Care plans tailored to individual preferences, strengths and aspirations, promoting independence and choice 

• Proactive health management – People supported to live healthier lives, with access to nutritionists, doctors and community activities 

• Strong application of Mental Capacity Act – Consent processes respected, with best interest decisions documented when needed 

• Evidence-based practice – Use of specialist input such as speech and language therapy and adherence to national guidance 

Inspectors used observations, documentation reviews and feedback from relatives and professionals to assess people’s experiences, as residents were not always able to fully express their views independently. 

Families of people supported at the service praised the team, according to the report, with one quoted as saying: “The staff are fantastic, they humble us. They understand her every nuance. Staff would know if she is distressed and I love how calm she is."
